Maybe It's A Full Moon?

I'm not sure what it is, but it appears than in the past 24 hours, a whole lot of folks have gone a bit crazy and everyone decided that it was the right time to act on the craziness. Some are business clients, some are family law clients, all seem to have turned some kind of corner last night.

The most interesting one was the gentleman who decided that he did not have to obey a Court-ordered stipulation that his attorney drafted. With the Passover holiday upon us, there was a certain schedule set in place. For reasons unknown to everyone, including his own attorney, this gentleman just decided that he wasn't going to honor the schedule. No reason was given, just no, he wasn't going to do it.

We spent hours today trying to figure out why to no avail. Even his attorney was perplexed when we got on the telephone with the Judge, who pointed out that the gentleman had insisted on this particular schedule and should stick to it. But yet again, he said no. After a full day of back and forth, it appears that he has decided to back down and abide by the terms of the agreement, but only time will tell how the Passover schedule goes and if he actually complies with it.

All in all, it just created a whole lot of unnecessary drama on a Friday afternoon...

Transitioning to Omnifocus

In between the legal work, I finally downloaded Omnifocus to try it out across my offices to get a better handle on task management for the matters I'm working on. If you spend the time to research the different workflows that people use, it really looks to be a powerful application to integrate into your company.

One of the main motivators for the transition was that when I meet with small business clients, they all seem to have the app on their phone or their laptop. We work on their business goals and getting their business off the ground and they all seem to launch Omnifocus to create the action items that we need to get things going.

So after watching client after client rave about Omnifocus, I figured it was time for me to check it out as well...

The Disappearing Weeks...

It can be amazing how fast certain things can creep up on you and then when you come out the other end, you realize it's two weeks later.

It seems like yesterday that April arrived and with it, some mediations and trial time that would take me through tax day (which is today in case you missed the myriad of stories about it all over the news/online). And now here we are on April 18...

With the arrival of tax time, I've been working with a few small companies on their dissolution, whether through mediation (which requires a lot more time and animosity) or by a business succession agreement to assist the parties to re-define their roles in the business. One of the more emotional issues that arose in each situation was the attachment to the business they founded and the realization that the business would be evolving into something totally different going forward.

It can be even harder when it is your name on the business, but you have decided that it is time to move on and you want to make sure you are leaving the business (and your reputation and name) in good hands. How easy is it for you to let go of that control that you have spent so much time cultivating while you grew your business? Can you even do it? Getting to that answer can be one of the hardest quests for a business owner.

But in the end, whether the business owners can agree or not, the businesses must move forward to their next iterations.

A Long Day of Bad Jokes...

Trying to get work done today and I'm being constantly bombarded with emails and bad jokes that are masking as April Fool's Day pranks. If I had the time or inclination, I would just send everyone a link to John Oliver's take on April Fool's Day. It would save us all a lot of time and groans...
